On the day the United States inaugurated its own embassy in Jerusalem, Israeli gunfire killed 60 Palestinians during the Gaza border protests.

On Monday, Vietnam dismissed claims that it participated in a gala hosted by Israel to celebrate the opening of a new US embassy in Jerusalem.

Israel said it was a warranted response to numerous shooting incidents throughout Wednesday, including machine gun fire, which targeted the city of Sderot in the Southern District of Israel.

For decades, the West Bank-based Abbas has pursued a strategy of independence through negotiations, hoping Washington would persuade Israel to cede the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem - lands it captured in 1967 - to a Palestinian state.

Since the Hamas-led protests began on March 30, more than 110 Palestinians have been killed and more than 2,500 wounded by live fire, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. They said the Palestinians would not accept medicine "from the murderers of our people".

There have been numerous calls for an independent investigation into the deaths, with Britain, Germany and Switzerland among those supporting such action.

"Hamas is exclusively responsible for the events transpiring in and out of Gaza, and is accountable for all terrorist activity emanating from Gaza targeting Israeli civilians and Israeli sovereignty", the IDF said.

The U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and the embassy move are both seen as achievements for Israel.

Israel, which has faced blistering worldwide criticism over its response, is likely to latch on to the remarks to bolster its claims that Hamas has used the weekly border protests as cover to stage attacks.


On Wednesday, a senior Hamas official, Salah Bardawil, claimed 50 of the people killed on Monday were its members.

Erdogan on Tuesday said "Netanyahu is the PM of an apartheid state".

Guatemala was one of only a few nations that backed Trump's decision in December to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and it is only the second country to move its embassy to the holy city.

Pakistan expressed grave concerns over the shifting of the USA embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, a move that mounted tension in the region causing the death of more than 60 Palestinians in Israeli forces' firing along Gaza border.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Palestine in February.

"We are very disappointed at African countries which had celebrated the declaration of Jerusalem as the official capital city of Israel by the USA".

"Behind the protests is Hamas, which governs Gaza and is regarded as a terrorist group by the U.S., Israel and the European Union".

"We are facing a state of blatant aggression against global law and legitimacy which was embodied by the USA embassy's transfer in the occupying state to Jerusalem", said Abul Gheit.
