This was unchanged from December and down from 3.9 percent in January 2017.
The District's rate in January was 5.8 percent, down from 5.9 percent in December, and down from 6.0 percent in January 2017. Government employment fell by 0.5 percent, according to the Department of Workforce Solutions.
Iowa and Vermont joined Nebraska at the January rate of 2.9 percent.
The unemployment rates for Grand Island, Lincoln and Omaha have not been seasonally adjusted, so they can not be directly compared with the state unemployment rate.
The state reported that the number of people working in SC in January was again above 2.2 million.
January is starting the year on a slightly cloudier note: unemployment ticked up a substantial 0.6 point, and the number of unemployed people in the county increased by 273, to 2,128.
The labor force data also does not distinguish how many workers are full time, temporary or part time, or how many jobs people are working. The results reportedly outpaced the expectations of economists, who had anticipated that about 200,000 jobs would be added in the month. "When companies come here, that's the number one question they ask - do you have a labor force? and we're able to provide that labor force for them".
January's numbers, through up, were still an improvement compared to 2017, when Lee and Collier's unemployment rates were 4.7 and 4.5 percent, respectively. The February report will be released on March 23. That figure was four-tenths of a percent higher than a year earlier, when unemployment stood at 5.6 percent in the county.
