The Locust Grove Police Officer killed Friday in the line of duty was a five-year veteran of the department.
Sheriff McBrayer said his deputies went to the home to serve an arrest warrant late Friday morning.
The Locust Grove officer died at the scene from a gunshot wound.
The slain suspect has been identified by authorities but his name will not be released until his next of kin are notified, said Nelly Miles of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
"Police officers don't get paid enough for what they have to do", Wade Corley said.
Both sheriff's deputies were wearing bulletproof vests at the time of the incident, McBrayer said.
He said gunfire emitted as they were attempting to arrest a male suspect.
Henry County Sheriff Keith McBrayer announced the death at an afternoon news conference.
Price said Maddox and his wife were the parents of one child and were expecting another.
Two of the officers were taken from the scene to a hospital by helicopter, while the third was taken to a hospital by ambulance.
The shooting took place inside a home off St. Francis Court in Locust Grove.
Police blocked off the subdivision and were not letting those who don't live there enter.
As a precaution, Locust Grove Elementary School has been placed on lockdown.
