PS4 System Update 5.50 Features Supersampling, Parental Controls, and More

Upcoming Update Features PS4 Supersampling Mode

PS4 firmware 5.50 new features include library UI updates, Supersampling Mode, custom wallpapers, more

The next PlayStation 4 firmware update will make the PS4 Pro a lot more like the Xbox One X.

The introduction of the Play Time Management feature seems to be the highlight of the update, letting family members track the play time of the child family members on PSN. Notifications are sent to children while they're playing, giving them a heads-up on when they should save or quit because their playtime is set to end.

There's also the option to add extra game time and the choice to automatically log the child out of the PS4 once their allotted playtime is over.

The improvements coming in PS4 firmware version 5.50 were detailed today over on the PlayStation Blog.

Following on from this, there's a new function that lets you hide certain apps under the purchased tab in the Library. Once the image has been imported from USB, users can zoom, crop and preview them.

One of the main changes with the PS4 5.50 update is that the game Library has now been divided into two different areas.

From the dashboard go to Settings Themes Select Theme Custom Select Image USB Storage Device. If you want to create a PS4 background from your own images on a USB stick, you'll be able to do that now too. If your PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock will appear next to your game so you know which games you can play if you re-subscribe. This PS4 tab lists all the apps installed on the console, and the tab with your name and avatar lists all the apps you bought with your PSN ID. That means players still have plenty of time to redeem games like Knack, Rime, Spelunker HD, Grand Kingdom, Starblood Arena, and more.

Supersampling Mode on PS4 Pro: This feature will no doubt be the one to get PS4 users the most excited.

If you'd like to be considered for all of our System Software Betas, in addition to completing enrolment for this System Software Beta, please also complete the general enrolment form below. Last but not least, there's a new option for tournament team pages that lets you customize logo and backgrounds as well as edit the profile of your team.

For PS4 Pro gamers, the firm is adding a new "supersampling" mode, which boosts the visuals for gamers still operating on 1080p TVs. You'll also be able to access media shortcuts - when using Spotify on the console, for example, opening the Quick Menu and pressing square will allow you to control the volume.

Among the biggest new features is Supersampling on PS4 Pro, which is ideal if you don't own a 4K TV.

If you are getting swarmed with bought as well as earned games from PS Plus, the PS4 Update 5.50 has you covered.

Sony notes: Certain games' image clarity may not improve with this feature. With the beta in full swing, Sony is detailing what testers can expect from 5.50.

That is to say, Sony had in theory replaced the original Gold headset with the Platinum model, which offered an even more precious metal in the title and new 3D audio features, albeit at a $159.99 price tag instead of the original Gold's $99.99.
